چکیده

In this article we present an approach for the interactive retrieval of objects from databases that is based on the similarity of the objects. The considered objects are grouped based on their similarity to realise interactive associative search and visual exploration of the database. This enables a user to navigate through similar objects. If a textual description is available, the navigation, especially the search for the first appropriate object, is supported by conventional keyword search methods. The method can be applied to databases consisting of arbitrary objects if at least a description based on a numerical feature vector can be given.

Interactive Text Retrieval Based on Document Similarities

In this article we present a prototypical implementation of a software tool for document retrieval which groups/arranges (pre-processed) documents based on a similarity measure. The prototype was developed based on self-organising maps to realise interactive associative search and visual exploration of document databases. This helps a user to navigate through similar documents. The navigation, ...

Content-Based Retrieval of Web Pages and Other Hierarchical Objects with Self-organizing Maps

We propose a content-based information retrieval (CBIR) method that models known relationships between multimedia objects as a hierarchical tree-structure incorporating additional implicit semantic information. The objects are indexed based on their contents by mapping automatically extracted low-level features to a set of Self-Organized Maps (SOMs). The retrieval result is formed by estimating...

A study of the use of self-organising maps in information retrieval

Purpose We studied the applicability of self-organising maps for searching for information in a document collection. Design / methodology / approach – After conventional preprocessing, like transform into vector space, documents from a German document collection were trained for a neural network of Kohonen selforganising map type. Such an unsupervised network forms a document map from which rel...

A Video Browsing Application Based on Visual MPEG-7 Descriptors and Self-Organising Maps

The paper introduces a novel approach for interactive video browsing that makes video content fully transparent to the user. Video clips are analysed and indexed by two tree structures: a content index tree representing the content of automatically segmented video shots and a time index tree representing the temporal structure. The index top levels give an overview over the entire content. Subs...

GalSOM - Colour-Based Image Browsing and Retrieval with Tree-Structured Self-Organising Maps

This paper describes an image browsing and retrieval application called GalSOM. Bitmap images are described by their colour histograms and sorted using an improved variant of the tree-structured self-organising map (TS-SOM) algorithm. The advantages of using such a system are discussed in detail, and their application to the problem of image theft detection is proposed.
